Art Is What We Live For

I was browsing through several art accounts on Instagram and I’ve also been watching time lapse videos of artists’ acrylic paintings. While watching I was so amazed and it’s so comforting as well, and suddenly I started wondering why growing up we were so discouraged to pursue art as a career.

We were encouraged to get a business course or become a lawyer, doctor, pilot, or any other career as long as it does not include art and self-expression. I remembered when I was young I wanted to become a teacher and then it changed to having to do with arts, I was a member of the arts club when I was in grade school. I really loved writing and drawing back then but people around me kept saying “there’s no money in art” “it’s an unstable career” but looking back with my realizations now, art is what keeps us sane. Art is what keeps us inspired. We all need a creative outlet, it is a healthy way to release stress and it is also an effective way to express yourself when you can’t in the usual way. But why do the society belittle people who has dreams of becoming an artist?

But when you look at it, when you make it big it pays out well. Look at the famous writers, singers, actors some of them are the wealthiest people in the world. So, I keep wondering why the society belittle artists when they sit in their homes enjoying Netflix or playing video games when all of these came from art?

  1. I totally agree with everything in this post. Frankly, I think one of the biggest reasons that society belittles artists is because it’s an unstable career. It’s not really guaranteed that you’re gonna make it big in this world, and it’s not always guaranteed that you’ll become successful. You might be spending the majority of your time and energy into creating art, but it’s more likely that you wouldn’t get the pay that you deserve. So I think that’s why we really have to appreciate artists cause they cannot just be doing this for the money

    • Trueee, I see artists as these brave ones who weather through tons of discouragements, doubts and criticisms from so many people and they still manage to get by and continue making art.

  2. Hmmm a very good point – honestly I’ve never really thought about art in this way but art can be very interesting but I might understand why others class it as ‘boring’ I do hope it becomes more mainstream as it is lovely! Thank you for sharing!

  3. I agree with you Joana. Art is such an important part of life yet society discourages us from pursuing it as a career all because of money. There is more to life than just money. Art allows us a way to express ourselves, show the beauty of the world, and to create something wonderful that can be appreciated.

    • Yep, I remember this line from Dead Poets Society “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are the noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life but poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” And it’s true there’s more to life than just making money.

  4. I completely agree with you. Art has been always been look down upon by people despite it is the art that makes them stress-free, be it is movies, songs, paintings, dancing, writing, etc. And some people who belong to the art forms are the wealthiest and the most famous.
